About Adi Keshav Temple

Adi Keshav Temple stands as one of Varanasi's oldest and most significant temples, dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Keshava). Located at Raj Ghat where the Varuna meets the Ganga, the temple holds profound religious importance in Hindu tradition. According to legend, this sacred site marks where Lord Vishnu first placed his feet upon earth during his incarnation in Kashi, earning it the name Padodak (footwater). The temple has endured multiple destructions and reconstructions throughout history: it was rebuilt by the king of Garhwal after destruction in 1194 AD, and again reconstructed in 1807 AD by the Diwan of Gwalior King Scindia following Mughal-era devastation. The temple's architecture distinctively follows the Kathmandu style, making it architecturally unique among nearby temples built in traditional Indian styles. The shrine is referenced in ancient religious texts including the Skanda Purana's Kashi Khanda, which discusses the significance of Kashi and the various names of Lord Vishnu, of which Keshav is one of the twenty-four.
