Bharat Mata Mandir
About Bharat Mata Mandir
Located on the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith campus in Varanasi, Bharat Mata Mandir represents a distinctive approach to temple architecture and worship. Rather than housing conventional idols of gods and goddesses, the temple's central feature is an intricately carved marble map of Akhand Bharat (undivided India) that depicts geographical features including mountains, plains, rivers, and major cities. The structure itself is pentagon-shaped, supported by five pillars, with the main hall displaying marble statues of significant figures in Indian history such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose. The temple was conceived by philanthropist and freedom fighter Shiv Prasad Gupta and designed by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, founder of Banaras Hindu University. The marble map is ceremonially filled with water on Independence Day and Republic Day, symbolizing the nation's spiritual and physical unity. The temple welcomes visitors of all faiths and nationalities, embodying India's inclusive spirit.
