Bhimashankar Temple
About Bhimashankar Temple
Situated in the village of Bhimashankar in Pune district, Maharashtra, this temple represents a composite of old and new architectural elements in the Nagara style. The main structure dates to the 13th century, while the sabhamandap was constructed in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis, who also built the shikhara. The temple houses one of Maharashtra's three Jyotirlingas and serves as a major pilgrimage destination. The surrounding Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Western Ghats, harbors rare species including the Malabar Giant Squirrel. The temple is also the source of the river Bhima, which becomes known as Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur. Historical records indicate that Maratha ruler Shivaji made endowments to support worship services, and Chimaji Appa donated one of five large bells captured from Vasai Fort.
