This 2,500-year-old temple complex spans 14 acres and features 14 towering gopurams, with the southern tower reaching an impressive 170 feet in height, making it one of Asia's tallest temple towers. The sanctuary is adorned with approximately 33,000 intricate sculptures and carvings showcasing exceptional Dravidian craftsmanship spanning centuries. Notable architectural features include the Hall of 1,000 Pillars with sculptures that produce musical notes when struck, the Golden Lotus Tank where devotees bathe before entering the inner sanctum, and perfectly aligned towers that cast no shadow at certain times of the year. Mentioned in Sangam literature and praised in sixth-century texts, the temple has witnessed numerous dynasties throughout Indian history and is recognized on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
