Doleshwor Mahadeva Temple
About Doleshwor Mahadeva Temple
Located in Sipadol village near Suryabinayak Municipality in Bhaktapur District, approximately 20 kilometers from Kathmandu, Doleshwor Mahadeva Temple holds profound spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. According to local belief spanning four millennia, the temple houses the head of Lord Kedarnath, who assumed the form of a bull during an encounter with the Pandava brothers following the Mahabharata war. When the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness for the war's casualties, Shiva disguised himself as a fleeing bull; as they captured its tail, the head separated from the body. While the remaining form is believed to reside at Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, India, the head is venerated at this temple. The Kedarnath Temple's head priest officially recognized Doleshwor Mahadev as the head of Kedarnath on August 22, 2009. Following a devastating 2013 flood at Kedarnath Temple in India, regular prayers were transferred to Doleshwor, elevating its spiritual importance. Pilgrims consider visiting Doleshwor Mahadeva, Pashupatinath, and Kedarnath as completing the sacred Char Dham Yatra.
