Ganga Devi
About Ganga Devi
Located at Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar, Ganga Devi temple serves as the focal point for the renowned Ganga Aarti, a vedic ritual steeped in spiritual significance. The name Har Ki Pauri translates to 'footsteps of the Lord,' and the most sacred bathing area, Brahma Kund, is believed to be where a drop of amrit (nectar of immortality) fell during the cosmic churning of the ocean. The Ganges emerges from the Himalayan plains at this ghat, making the evening aarti feel like a personal welcome to the river. Priests ring brass bells, blow conch shells, and circle large multi-tiered oil lamps while pilgrims float leaf-cup diyas onto the water. The ritual draws thousands of devotees daily, with particularly large crowds during Kartik Purnima and Mondays of Shravan when saffron-clad Kanwar pilgrims arrive by the thousands.
