Govindarajaswamy Temple
About Govindarajaswamy Temple
Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple stands as one of Tirupati's most significant Hindu temples, located in the heart of the temple city. Consecrated in 1130 AD by the renowned Vaishnavite saint Ramanujacharya, the temple houses Lord Govindaraja Swamy as its primary deity. According to temple legend, the deity was originally brought to Tirupati from Chidambaram for safekeeping during Muslim invasions of South India. After normalcy returned to Chidambaram, the vigraham was taken back, but Saint Ramanujacharya later received a divine vision instructing him to establish the deity permanently in Tirupati. The temple complex contains numerous sub-shrines dedicated to various deities and saints, including Sri Parthasarathi Swamy, Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy, and multiple Alwar temples. Daily rituals follow the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition, mirroring the practices at Srivari Temple in Tirumala. The temple is administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and attracts millions of devotees annually, particularly during Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadasi celebrations.
