Hanuman Garhi Temple
About Hanuman Garhi Temple
Located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, Hanuman Garhi Temple stands as one of the city's most important religious sites alongside Ram Mandir and Nageshwar Nath Temple. The shrine features a distinctive fortress-like structure built from red sandstone with four circular bastions symbolizing Hanuman's protective role. Visitors ascend 76 steps to reach the sanctum housing a rare 6-inch gold idol of Hanuman seated on Maa Anjani's lap. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman resided in a cave at this location to guard Ramkot, the birthplace of Lord Rama. The temple's origins trace to the 10th century, though it was destroyed during the Mughal period and reconstructed in the 18th century by the Bairagis of the Ramanandi Sampradaya. In 1855, the Nawab of Awadh granted land revenue for the temple's development. The shrine remains under the charge of Bairagi Mahants and the Nirvani Akhara, serving as a vibrant spiritual hub for devotees.
