Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Varanasi
About Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Varanasi
Located in the heart of old Varanasi near Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kaal Bhairav Mandir holds profound spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. The presiding deity is represented by a silver-faced image of Kaal Bhairav adorned with a garland of skulls and holding a trident, symbolizing his role as both protector and punisher. According to ancient belief, even Yamraj, the god of death, cannot enter Varanasi without Kaal Bhairav's permission. The temple atmosphere is intensely devotional, filled with rhythmic chants and ringing bells. Tuesdays and Sundays are considered especially auspicious, with devotees offering oil, black sesame, flowers, and notably liquor—a rare ritual unique to this temple where the offering is later returned as prasad. The sacred thread (Bhairav Raksha Sutra) is tied around devotees' wrists for protection and blessings. Mentioned in ancient scriptures such as the Skanda Purana, this shrine embodies Kashi's philosophy where creation and destruction, compassion and discipline coexist.
