Kardmeshwar Temple
About Kardmeshwar Temple
Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple stands as a rare survivor among Varanasi's temples, having endured the destructions of the Mughal period in the 17th century. The temple is distinguished by its intricate carved images of divine dancers, musicians, serpents, and mythical creatures, with these sculptural elements originating from the 6th-7th centuries. Constructed in the 10th century, it represents significant archaeological importance and is protected by the Government of Uttar Pradesh under the UP Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Preservation Act of 1956. The temple is situated within the premises of Mahishasurmardini (Chamunda Devi) temple and is also recognized in the Pancha Krosha Yatra, the sacred circumambulatory pilgrimage that encompasses 128 deities throughout the Kashi region.
