About Koodal Azhagar Temple
Located in central Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Koodal Azhagar Temple stands as a significant Vaishnavite sanctuary where Vishnu is worshipped as Viyooga Sundarrajan alongside his consort Lakshmi as Mathuravalli. The temple showcases a rare octagonal tower structure with three distinct levels representing seated, standing, and reclining forms of the deity. Constructed in the classical Dravidian architectural style, it ranks as the 47th among the 108 Divya Desams and holds prominence among eighteen sacred Pandyan temples. Rituals follow Vaikhanasa Agama traditions, and the temple has maintained its spiritual significance since medieval times when Pandyan kings patronized its development.
