Kuruvithurai Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal Temple
About Kuruvithurai Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal Temple
Located in Kuruvithurai near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, this Vaishnava shrine is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. The temple is traditionally associated with the Chithirai (Chitra) nakshatra, believed to govern brilliance, design, and artistic talent. The primary deity, Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal, is worshipped as Lord Vishnu appearing on a celestial chariot. A distinctive feature of this temple is the use of sandalwood for the main deity idol and the consort idols of Shri Devi and Boo Devi, which is rare among Tamil Nadu temples. The shrine also houses a Goddess Lakshmi shrine and Garuda. According to tradition, the temple was constructed during the reign of Jadavarma Vallabha Pandya in the early 12th century, with inscriptions dating back over a millennium. Devotees visit on Chithirai star days to seek blessings for creativity, recognition, and artistic excellence.
