Located in the heart of Madurai, this ancient temple complex is dedicated to Meenakshi (an aspect of Parvati) and Sundaraswarar (an aspect of Shiva) as its primary deities. The reconstructed temple complex spans approximately 14 acres and is surrounded by fourteen gopurams averaging 45 to 50 meters in height, with the southern gopuram reaching an impressive 51.9 meters (170 feet), making it the tallest structure. The temple complex is adorned with intricately carved pillars and sculptures throughout its sprawling grounds, serving as a living testament to Dravidian architectural excellence. The temple's significance is underscored by its mention in Sangam literature and sixth-century texts, establishing its ancient heritage and religious importance.
