Maya Devi Temple, Haridwar
About Maya Devi Temple, Haridwar
Maya Devi Temple stands as a significant Hindu shrine dedicated to goddess Maya, an incarnation of Shakti and Durga, located near Har ki Pauri Ghat in Haridwar. The temple is believed to mark the spot where the heart and navel of Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva, fell during her divine journey after her self-sacrifice in her father's sacrificial fire. According to Hindu mythology, when Sati immolated herself to preserve her husband's honor, Lord Shiva carried her body across the universe, and various parts fell at different locations, each becoming a sacred Shakta pitha. The temple houses three idols representing Goddess Maya (depicted with three heads and four arms), Kali, and Kamakhya. Built during the eleventh century, it completes the Siddhi Peeth triangle of Haridwar alongside Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples. The site draws particularly large crowds during Navaratri and the Kumbh Mela, when devotees seek blessings from this powerful manifestation of the divine feminine.
