Omkareshwar Mandir
About Omkareshwar Mandir
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on sacred Mandhata Island within the Narmada River, approximately 77 kilometers from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The temple's significance is documented in ancient texts including the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana. Built in the graceful Nagara architectural style, the shrine features finely carved pillars, stepped corridors, and ornate stone patterns influenced by the Paramara rulers and later enhanced by the Holkar dynasty. The island is traditionally believed to resemble the sacred Om symbol. The temple is distinguished by its unique Shayan Darshan arrangements, where special sleeping rituals and ceremonies honor Lord Shiva's daily rest after traversing the three worlds. The complex encompasses sculpted mandapas, elevated plinths, and symmetrical layouts reflecting classical design principles aligned with sacred geometry traditions of Shiva temples. Devotees visit throughout the day for darshan and aarti, with the atmosphere intensifying during evening rituals and festival celebrations.
