Omkareshwar Temple
About Omkareshwar Temple
Omkareshwar Temple stands as the fourth among the twelve revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, located on Mandhata Island near Khandwa city in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district. The temple is built in the traditional Nagara architectural style, featuring finely carved pillars, stepped corridors, and ornate stone patterns influenced by the Paramara rulers and later enhanced by the Holkar dynasty. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva rests here after traversing the three worlds daily, making it unique for its special sleeping rituals and Shayan Darshan ceremonies. The sacred site sits on the northern bank of the Narmada River, approximately 77 kilometers from Indore, and is the only Jyotirlinga located along the northern shore of this river. The temple's spiritual significance is documented in ancient scriptures including the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
