Located on the southern bank of the Vaikkai River in the temple city of Madurai, the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple stands as a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture. The presiding deities are Goddess Meenakshi, an aspect of Parvati, and Lord Sundareshwarar, an aspect of Shiva. Mentioned in Sangam literature and praised in sixth-century texts, this ancient shrine has been reconstructed over centuries and now encompasses a sprawling complex surrounded by 14 gopurams averaging 45 to 50 meters in height, with the southern gopuram reaching an impressive 51.9 meters (170 feet). The temple complex is adorned with sculptured pillars and contains over 33,000 intricate carvings, making it a major pilgrimage destination drawing devotees throughout the day.
