Shankar Deol
About Shankar Deol
Built by Hindu merchant Dhakji Dadaji in 1831, this sacred temple stands majestically in the Mahalaxmi locality and has served as a cornerstone of spiritual life in Mumbai for nearly two centuries. According to local legend, the idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi was discovered in the sea during construction of the Hornby Vellard causeway. The sanctum sanctorum houses three principal deities: Goddess Mahalakshmi (the principal deity and bestower of wealth and fortune), Goddess Mahakali (representing divine power and destruction of evil), and Goddess Mahasaraswati (embodying knowledge and wisdom). The temple reaches peak vibrancy during Navratri when grand celebrations attract lakhs of pilgrims from across India, and holds special significance during Diwali's Lakshmi Poojan and Akshaya Tritiya.
