Shitala Mata Mandir
About Shitala Mata Mandir
Located on the serene Shitala Ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi, Shitala Mata Mandir is a sanctuary dedicated to Goddess Shitala, the deity associated with smallpox, chickenpox, fever, and heat. The temple stands out for its unique architectural style, featuring a distinctive flat roof unlike the towering shikharas typical of North Indian temples. Within its welcoming walls are multiple shrines dedicated to various deities, creating a mosaic of divine presence. The temple's simplicity in structure provides a humble backdrop to profound spiritual experiences. Devotees visit frequently throughout the year, with particularly large gatherings during Shitalashtami, the festival observed on the eighth day of the bright half of Vaishakh (April-May), when worshippers seek protection from diseases and offer cool liquids to pacify the goddess. The temple is accessible via steps leading down to the river, adding to the authenticity of the pilgrimage experience.
