Sri Vakulamatha Temple, Tirupati
About Sri Vakulamatha Temple, Tirupati
The Sri Vakulamatha Temple stands on the Peruru Banda hillock in Peruru village, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh. According to Tirumala tradition, Vakula Devi is revered as an avatar of Yashoda (Krishna's foster-mother) who was reborn to witness Lord Venkateswara's marriage to Padmavathi, fulfilling an ancient boon. The temple's sanctum is architecturally oriented so that the deity's face permanently faces toward the Tirumala hills where her divine son resides. A distinctive ritual protocol links the temple to Tirumala's daily worship: at the main Naivedya offering, food is first ritually presented at Vakulamatha, signaled by the ringing of a bell, before being offered at the Tirumala sanctum. This structural inversion—where the mother receives the first offering—reflects South Indian Vaishnava traditions honoring the mother-son bond. The temple dates to approximately 300 years ago and was renovated and inaugurated on 23 July 2022 under the administration of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
