Taraknath temple
About Taraknath temple
Located on the banks of the Hooghly River in Tarakeswar, approximately 60 kilometers from Kolkata, Taraknath Temple stands as a significant spiritual destination in West Bengal. Built in 1729 by Raja Bharamalla around a self-manifested Shiva linga discovered in the region's forests, the temple exemplifies Bengal's classical atchala architectural style with curved cornices, lotus patterns, and a natmandir forecourt. The main shrine houses a two-foot black stone swayambhu linga adorned with silver and white cloth. Adjacent to the primary temple are shrines dedicated to Kali and Lakshmi Narayan. The sacred Dudhpukur pond to the north is believed to fulfill the prayers of those who bathe in its waters. According to Shiv Purana, this temple ranks among the 64 Jyotirlingas, making it a destination of considerable religious significance for Hindu pilgrims seeking blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual liberation.
