Thathayyagunta Gangamma Temple
About Thathayyagunta Gangamma Temple
Located in the Tataiahgunta area of Tirupati, this temple serves as a spiritual cornerstone distinct from the Venkateswara worship in the hills. Goddess Gangamma is revered as the gramadevata (village deity) and protector of Tirupati, traditionally visited by devotees before proceeding to Tirumala. According to local tradition, the Goddess's dark visage was historically smeared with punugu, a fragrant paste, to protect her identity during times of invasion. The temple maintains daily darshan and worship services, with the atmosphere intensifying during evening rituals and festival celebrations. The annual Gangamma Jatara, a seven-day summer festival culminating in the 'Chappudu' ceremony, draws lakhs of devotees and is marked by unique rituals including devotees wearing turmeric-smeared costumes. The temple also celebrates Navaratri with special daily decorations for the Goddess.
