Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga
About Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga
Baba Baidyanath Dham, located in Deoghar, Jharkhand, stands as the ninth of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Vaidyanath—the Lord of Physicians. The temple's sacred narrative traces back to the Treta Yug when Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Shiva descended as a Jyotirlinga and healed Ravana's wounds, earning the epithet Baidyanath. The present temple structure was constructed and patronized by local rulers and devoted kings over centuries during the medieval period. The site gained significant prominence during British rule, with documented pilgrimages and the famous Shravani Mela growing exponentially in scale. Today, the temple welcomes millions of devotees annually, blending ancient spiritual traditions with modern facilities. The Shravani Mela, occurring during the monsoon month of Shravan (July-August), represents the world's largest annual walking pilgrimage, with devotees carrying holy Ganga water over 100 kilometers barefoot from Sultanganj to Deoghar.
