Vandiyur Mariamman Temple
About Vandiyur Mariamman Temple
Located approximately 2-3 kilometers from the Meenakshi Amman Temple on the banks of the Vaigai River, Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is one of South India's largest temple tanks. The site originated when sand was excavated to construct the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, and during this process, an idol of Lord Ganesha was discovered and subsequently enshrined in a temple built on the central island. The tank is surrounded by granite steps on all four sides and receives water from the Vaigai River through underground channels. The temple complex is particularly renowned for its annual Teppoothsavam or float festival celebrated during January or February on a full moon night, commemorating King Thirumalai Nayak's birthday. During this festival, idols of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar are brought to the tank and placed on an illuminated float, creating a spectacular display reflected in the water and illuminated by thousands of lamps that attracts devotees from across the country.
