Yamunotri Temple
About Yamunotri Temple
Yamunotri Temple stands in the western Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, at an elevation of 3,291 metres. The temple houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna, the divine river goddess and fourth queen of Lord Krishna. As the first destination in the Chhota Char Dham yatra, it attracts thousands of devotees annually. The temple operates seasonally, opening on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and closing around Diwali or Bhai Dooj (October/November). A distinctive ritual involves Surya Kund, where rice and potatoes are cooked in the hot spring water as sacred prasad. During winter months, the idol is relocated to Kharsali village for worship.
